Breastfeeding - benefits for life

"Breastfeeding - benefits for life" is the motto of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week. This campaigning week aims to draw public attention to the issue of breastfeeding and hence to actively promote breastfeeding and its acceptance. The National Breastfeeding Committee has supported World Breastfeeding Week for many years and takes this opportunity to advertise its comprehensive informative materials on the subject of breastfeeding.

Breast milk is the ideal nourishment for babies. It is easy to digest and composed in such a way that it meets the baby’s needs for nutrients and liquid in the first year of life. In addition, breastfeeding reinforces the bond between mother and child. To promote breastfeeding in Germany, the National Breastfeeding Committee was founded in 1994. It has been based at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) since 2002. The Committee is composed of members of medical professional associations and organisations who are committed to the issue of breastfeeding.

The Breastfeeding Committee has drawn up recommendations on breastfeeding which are intended not only for mothers but also doctors, midwives, and clinical staff. The information can be downloaded from the website of the BfR or ordered free of charge. The central leaflets “Breastfeeding Recommendations for Pregnant Women” and “Breastfeeding Recommendations for Breastfeeding Mothers” are both available in six languages.

In addition, the National Breastfeeding Committee provides information, for example, on how to correctly handle pumped breast milk and how to use breast milk for one’s own child in day care centres and similar child care facilities.
