Genomic Evidence of mcr-1.26 IncX4 Plasmid Transmission between Poultry and Humans

Colistin is used as a last-resort antimicrobial for the treatment of infections with multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in humans, but it is also widely administered as a therapeutic agent in veterinary medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal Escherichia coli infection in pigs and poultry.

The study provides further evidence for poultry husbandry as the source for the emergence of new mcr gene variants and their persistence, indicating a link between the two different niches (animal and human) through the presence of highly conserved mcr-1.26-IncX4 plasmids. The article was published in the journal "Microbiology Spectrum".
