It's not rocket science

How does dioxin get into milk? What’s the fish poisoning known as ciguatera all about? And how can you find out whether a chemical is harmful to your health? The 3rd BfR Science Slam features research stories like these. Scientists from the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) present their research with wit and humour, while competing for the audience's favour. Everything is allowed: Films, pictures, props - the more original, the better. "The 3rd BfR Science Slam showcases research topics in an exciting and, above all, humorous way, because science at the BfR is anything but dry and boring," says BfR President, Professor Dr Dr Andreas Hensel. The criminal biologist and author Dr. Mark Benecke and Professor Dr Dr Andreas Luch, head of the "Chemical and Product Safety" department at the BfR will moderate the evening.

Raise the curtain and set the stage! On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the BfR invites you to the 3rd Science Slam at Heimathafen Neukölln on 5 December 2022. Starting at 7:30 pm, the slammers will present their research. The Science Slam programme is as diverse as the research areas of the BfR: These include, for example, topics such as bacteria in flour and dough, poisoning by fish, poultry product safety or the assessment of the health risks posed by chemicals.

Each slammer has ten minutes to tell the non-specialist audience about their research. Scientific findings and issues relating to consumer health protection will be presented in an entertaining and informative manner. The winner of the “Science Battle” will be decided by the audience’s applause.

Registration is possible via the website of the BfR Academy:

Admission is free.

The BfR Science Slam has its origins in the BfR's legal mandate to ensure transparency and communication about the health risks of food, products and chemicals in a way that can be understood by the general public. Scientific exchange in a gladiatorial fashion in front of a broad audience allows the institute to step out of its usual routine and present its research in an entertaining way.

To get in the mood for the evening or get a foretaste of what’s in store, you can find all the videos from the previous two events on the BfR YouTube channel:
