Information event to be staged by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment at the Alexanderplatz in Berlin

This weekend, when Berlin's shops will also be open on Sunday, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is staging a public event for consumers on the Alexanderplatz square, complete with interactive games, surveys, a "wheel of fortune" and a wide range of information. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of September, visitors to the square will have the chance to speak directly to the experts from the BfR. "There's something for all age groups", says BfR President Andreas Hensel. "The information on tattoos is of particular interest to teenagers and young adults, the breastfeeding recommendations and a new app for cases of poisoning in children will address the concerns of young families, and food supplements is a topic that is above all of interest to the older generation." On Sunday, the well-known criminal biologist and author Dr. Mark Benecke will be answering questions on tattoos and tattooing.

The BfR is setting up a tattoo workplace to inform people about the health risks during tattoo puncturing. There will also be a survey on consumer behaviour in this area.

Visitors interested in food supplements can benchmark their nutritional habits at the BfR stand. With the help of food imitations and the relevant information, it is easy to check whether the food they eat every day covers daily requirements in terms of vitamins and minerals. Healthy people with balanced diets do not generally need to take food supplements.

Around 100,000 of the calls received by the poison information centres in Germany every year concern poisoning in children. The BfR has developed a new, free app called "Accidental Poisoning in Children" to help parents and educators in emergencies. It provides detailed information on toxins, explains first-aid measures and supplies tips on how to prevent these kinds of accidents. The recommendations and information on breastfeeding provided by the BfR experts are also geared towards young families.

What do Europeans expect from nanotechnology? This question is the subject of a survey being conducted in 30 countries - and also in Berlin by the BfR. Visitors can obtain information on this topic within the framework of the EU project "NanOpinion".
