“To the pots, set, GO!” - Opening of the BfR MEAL Study Kitchen

On October 20, 2016, the BfR MEAL study kitchen was opened jointly by Dr. Maria Flachsbarth, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), Thomas Mahlberg, Member of the German Bundestag, and Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel, President of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

As part of the opening event at the BfR site in Alt-Marienfelde, the German radioeins moderator Marco Seiffert accompanied the guests through the programme explaining the concept of the study. He spoke with experts about the challenges and explained - using the menu as an example - why some substances are included in the BfR MEAL Study.

Now - since November 7 and until the year 2020 - the BfR MEAL team will be cooking, frying and baking in this fully-equipped, typical household kitchen, just like normal consumers do at home. All because the BfR MEAL Study would like to clarify which quantities of beneficial, as well as potentially harmful substances, the population living in Germany consumes on average. For this purpose, foods will be bought in supermarkets, weekly markets etc. and prepared as they would be in a typical home.
