Engineered Nanomaterials: Novel Approaches for Risk Assessment and Safe-by-Design (NanoRiskSD)

09/2020-08/2023

Funding programme / funding institution: Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung

Project description:

Nanotechnology is a key enabling technology with many applications in different industrial sectors. Engineered nanomaterials (NMs) often show unique properties and enhanced functionality. They can be manufactured with different chemical compositions and physico-chemical properties can be precisely finetuned. Their increasing use demands for a proper hazard and risk assessment, which is, however, often challenging. The overarching goal of this project is to identify novel approaches for hazard and risk assessment of NMs and to implement them in intelligent testing strategies (ITS).

  1. Development of intelligent testing strategies (ITS)
Intelligent testing strategies will follow a tiered approach for NM hazard assessment. They will also consider and implement novel approaches (e.g. high throughput testing or organ-on-a-chip).
  2. Focusing on NM toxicity mechanisms
In particular the novel approaches will allow to elucidate NM toxicity mechanisms. This will facilitate novel approaches for risk assessment, e.g. grouping and read-across or the development of Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs).
  3. Safe-by-Design Approaches
Taken together the knowledge obtained will be used to establish safe-by-design principles, allowing to implement safety considerations already during early product development.
