Experts sought for the protection of laboratory animals

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfRperforms the role of the "National Committee for the Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes" - short National Committee for the Federal Republic of Germany. The goal is to provide scientifically based and independent advice to competent authorities and animal welfare bodies in order to promote a harmonised interpretation and application of the Animal Welfare Act across Germany. To fulfil this task, the BfR is setting up a pool of experts enabling the institute to quickly access specialised knowledge. This will ensure that the authorities and animal welfare bodies of the various scientific institutions are provided with competent advice. The BfR is currently looking for specialists in the areas of laboratory animals, animal experiments and animal welfare law who are willing to share their expertise with the National Committee in a honorary capacity. Applications close on 30 April 2017.

Located at the BfR, the National Committee is part of the German Centre for the Protection of Laboratory Animals (Bf3R) which was inaugurated in 2015. The Committee was set up as an advisory instrument on the basis of Directive 2010/63/EU. Its function is to advise the competent authorities for animal experiments of the federal states and the animal welfare bodies of scientific institutions in all matters concerning laboratory animals and animal experiments. In addition, the National Committee promotes the exchange of best practices at the national and EU level.

Innovative and interdisciplinary in its way of working, the National Committee fosters dialogue between different fields in order to promote a harmonised application of the Animal Welfare Act. Only a constructive exchange between science, veterinary medicine, human medicine and jurisprudence can enhance legal security and help providing the best possible protection for laboratory animals.

The pool of experts ensures that the National Committee has quick access to specialised knowledge, so that the competent authorities can be provided with flexible, prompt and scientifically sound advice.

The BfR is looking for the following experts:

  • Scientists
  • Experts in veterinary medicine
  • Experts in human medicine
  • Experts in jurisprudence
  • Animal facility managers
  • Animal keepers in senior positions

An important criterion for inclusion into the pool of experts is well-documented specialist knowledge in the relevant discipline. Interested scientists and animal keepers are asked to submit their application no later than 30 April 2017. All work for the National Committee (TierSchG) is done on a voluntary basis.
