Risks of tattoo pigments: Identification and estimation of the potential hazard of pigments by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Tattoo pigments can cause a large number of toxic effects in humans. In addition to infections and allergies, the formation of potentially carcinogenic substances is of scientific interest. The thermal decomposition of the colouring pigments was simulated at the BfR with the help of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Some of the decomposition products are also to be expected through the influence of sunlight or during laser removal.

The articles on the possible risks and data gaps, as well as the health-damaging decomposition products of tattoo pigments were published in the journal "Archives of Toxicology".
