At the right place for an appropriate time: Activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in human cells

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) regulates metabolism of several important xenobiotic compounds as for example benzo[a]pyrene. In parallel it mediates central physiological functions, notably in immunity and differentiation. Recent studies at the German German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) demonstrated that activation mechanisms are strongly dependent on export of receptor complexes from the nucleus. This novel activation model will now be used to investigate how xenobiotic agonist can affect endogenous receptor functions. This work has been published in Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) on August 18th 2016.

The Q-rich/PST domain of the AHR regulates both ligand-induced nuclear transport and nucleocytoplasmic shuttling.
